Chapter Nine

Dani showed up on Thursday evening for our kickboxing class. We pulled up in front of the building, and she parked the car.

‘I still feel horrible about the bridal shower,’ I said. ‘I’m so embarrassed.’

‘Anita is the one that should be embarrassed,’ she said, turning off the engine.

‘I felt even worse, though, when all the gifts were delivered. I had imagined actually opening them in front of everyone, you know, like other brides do, but noooo. Anita and Patricia.’

‘And your bitchy sister-in-law,’ she added. ‘I wish I was able to give her a piece of my mind.’

‘Yeah,’ I said, giving a defeated sigh. ‘And I have to see those people at the actual wedding.’

She looked to me. ‘I’m sure that they don’t blame you for freaking out on Anita. I think all of them already know she’s a bitch. They just can’t say anything because of how high up in the society food chain she is.’

I knew she was right. I nodded. ‘I guess so.’

‘Come on, let’s get in there so you can kick and punch the crap out of your feelings,’ she said with an encouraging smile.

I smiled back, nodding. ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’

We got out of the car as it started to rain, the clouds dark and thick, black. I felt like they were warning me of something bad to come. Some horrible omen. I tried to shrug it off.

We walked inside, my eyes glancing around to see who was there. I stopped as I saw Donald Vandermeer, speaking with the instructor.

‘What is it?’ Dani asked.

I pointed. ‘That guy talking to Jay, that’s Donald Vandermeer.’

‘The asshole that tried to buy you off and destroy Quinlan?’ she asked.

I nodded. ‘The one and only.’

‘He’s in an expensive suit. Something tells me that he’s not going to be working out,’ she said, crossing her arms.

I snorted a little. ‘I doubt that Donald Vandermeer has ever worked out a day in his life. Silver spoon and all.’

‘Probably,’ she said with a little smirk.

‘Miss Fournier.’

I turned, seeing Donald standing before me. I nodded, not impressed. ‘Mr. Vandermeer.’

‘I see you are enjoying my facilities,’ he said with a smirk, the grey in his cropped brown hair picking up the light. I was sure he was Quinn’s age, but he may have been older.

‘Your facilities?’ I repeated.

‘Yes, I own this building,’ he said, straightening out his cobalt blue tie.

‘Great,’ I said, grimacing.

‘I heard about your unfortunate accident,’ he said, seeming almost too pleased with it.

‘What accident?’ I asked.

‘The break-in,’ he said.

‘It wasn’t an accident,’ Dani said. ‘It was three guys beating the shit out of her.’

‘Nice to know that word spreads fast,’ I said. ‘I’m fine, thanks for asking.’

‘At least your bruising has healed. It would have been unfortunate for the wedding otherwise,’ he said.

My brow furrowed. ‘How did you know about that? I haven’t seen you since the engagement party.’

He gave a sly smile. ‘I have my ways.’

‘It’s you, isn’t it?’ I asked, Dani putting her hand on my arm. ‘You’re the one following me.
